ResidentialAir Conditioning Problems: Causes and Solutions

Domestic air conditioning in Cambridge and throughout the south of the UK is becoming increasingly popular as the weather continues to warm up. However, as summer progresses, many home air conditioners may encounter issues that prevent them from functioning properly. Thankfully, you may be able to fix some of the problems yourself instead of hiring an air conditioning contractor.

The following are some common problems that can occur when it comes to home air conditioning and how to resolve them.

Common Air Conditioning Unit Issues

The air conditioner won’t turn on

One of the most annoying hassles that can occur with domestic air conditioning is when the AC unit simply won’t function. First, check the power source for the thermostat is working correctly. If so, check that the cooling mode is on with the correct temperature settings. Finally, if the AC is still not working, check to see if the circuit breaker needs to be reset.

The AC unit is not blowing cold air

It is not much help having an AC unit that won’t cool you down on a hot day. If the unit is blowing warm air, there may be an issue with the air filter. A blocked or dirty air filter can cause the condenser unit to freeze up which limits the AC’s ability to provide cool air.

To avoid this happening check the air filter at least once a month and clean or replace it if necessary.

Water is leaking from the indoor AC unit

When you see water leaking down the walls or dripping from the ceiling, there is likely a problem with the unit’s condensate system. This could be a blockage in the drainage system due to mould or fungus or a breakdown of the pump. If drainage is the issue, you may be able to resolve it with a vacuum or by pouring 170 ml of white vinegar down the pipe. Otherwise, consult a technician.

Water is leaking from the AC unit outside

While some condensation is to be expected, a large puddle forming under the compressor unit could be a sign of something more serious. This can be caused by anything from a blocked air filter to low coolant levels or even improper installation. Once you have determined what the issue is, switch off the AC unit and disconnect it from the power supply and contact a technician if you are unsure how to proceed.

The refrigerant is leaking from the AC unit

In contrast to water, a refrigerant leak is where the coolant from the AC leaks out, leaving a discoloured liquid. It often occurs as AC units age and degrades over time. If the leak is minor, you can try replacing the refrigerant as a temporary fix. However, you will need to get a technician to reseal any leaking pipes.

The AC unit is making strange noises

If the unit is making a different sound from the one it usually makes, then it could indicate that a fault exists. A hissing sound could be a refrigerant leak, a screeching noise could be an issue with the motor and a buzzing sound could indicate a problem with the electrical components. In all cases turn off the AC, disconnect it from the power supply, try to diagnose the fault and call a technician if needed.

The evaporator coil has frozen

Without sufficient flow, warm air cannot reach the evaporator coil. When this happens the evaporator coil can freeze up preventing the air conditioner from effectively cooling the home. To fix this, first, turn off the AC unit and allow the coil to defrost for a day. While this is going on, inspect any damage and remove any blockages to the flow of air.

The electrical controls won’t work

If you are constantly turning your AC unit on and off, the fan controls and compressor can become worn out, preventing them from making the electrical connection needed to start the unit. Therefore, examine the electrical connections thoroughly to identify the problem and call in a technician if needed.

The AC keeps turning on and off by itself

The thermostat sensor is located near the evaporator coil and determines how much cooling is needed based on the ambient temperature. If you find that the sensor is out of position it may be causing the AC unit to randomly turn off and on again. Make sure the thermostat sensor is securely in place next to the evaporator coil.

There is a bad smell emanating from the AC unit

If there is an unpleasant or unusual smell coming from the AC unit then there is likely a problem. A smell of this kind could indicate mould or that an animal has entered the system and died. A burning smell could indicate an electrical fault, while a gas smell could indicate a dangerous leak. Remember to clean your unit regularly and if the odour persists, contact a technician.
